How to Winterize a Pond

Most of what goes wrong in a winter pond traces back to one misunderstanding: people think the winter threat is the cold, so they reach for a heater. It isn't the cold. A healthy koi or goldfish pond deep enough to keep an unfrozen layer at the bottom carries its fish through the winter near freezing without any trouble. The threat is a lid of ice sealing the surface, because once the pond is capped, the carbon dioxide and ammonia the fish give off have nowhere to go and the oxygen they need can't get in.

So winterizing isn't about warming the water. It's about getting the pond clean before it freezes, cutting off the waste you keep adding, keeping the warm deep water still, and holding one hole open in the ice from first freeze to thaw. We run the same sequence every fall, in the same order, and because this is a safety topic the survival rules below come from the extension services and aquatic vets, not from forum consensus.

The winterizing sequence we run every fall

Here's the full sequence in order. Each step has its own reason, and the last two are the ones that keep fish alive under the ice, so do them in this sequence and none of them halfway.

  • Net the fallen leaves out before they sink and rot on the bottom.
  • Cut back and remove the tender and tropical plants; trim the hardy ones and let them drop to the pond floor.
  • Stop feeding the fish once the water holds below about 50F, or 10C.
  • Pull the main pump, or raise its intake well off the bottom, so you stop circulating and chilling the warm deep water.
  • Keep a gas-exchange hole open all winter with a de-icer, ideally a de-icer plus an aerator with the air stone set high, not on the bottom.
  • Never smash or drill through the ice to make that hole; melt it instead.
  • Put every outdoor device on a GFCI-protected circuit, and don't try to heat the pond.

Net the leaves out before they sink and rot

The first job is the easiest one to skip and the one that quietly poisons a sealed pond. Fallen leaves that sink to the bottom don't just sit there; they decay, and decaying organic matter consumes oxygen and releases gases as it breaks down. In open water that's a slow nuisance. Under a lid of winter ice, with no gas exchange and no photosynthesis to replace the oxygen, a bed of rotting leaves becomes a direct competitor to your fish for the little oxygen there's. Get the leaves out while they're still floating, before they waterlog and drop.

The simple tool is a leaf net stretched over the whole pond through the fall drop. It catches the leaves before they ever reach the water, and you lift the net and empty it rather than fishing debris off the bottom in December. If you skipped the net, scoop what you can and pull the worst of the muck off the bottom before the freeze, because everything you leave down there's oxygen your fish won't get once the surface closes over.

Cut back the plants before the freeze

Plants split into two groups going into winter, and they want opposite treatment. Tender and tropical plants, the water hyacinth, water lettuce, tropical lilies and the like, won't survive a freeze, so cut them back and pull them out, or bring the ones you want to keep indoors. Left in the pond they die, rot, and add to the same oxygen-robbing load as the leaves.

Hardy plants are the opposite. Trim off the dying top growth so it doesn't decay in the water, then set the pots down on the pond floor where the water stays warmest and doesn't freeze. Hardy marginals and hardy lilies overwinter dormant down there and come back in spring. The rule is the same for both groups: nothing dead or dying should be left floating in a pond that's about to be sealed under ice.

Stop feeding once the water holds below 50F

This is a survival step, not a preference, and the number comes from the extension and aquatic-vet guidance rather than from feel. A fish is cold-blooded, so as the water cools its metabolism slows to match, and its digestion slows with it. Somewhere around 50F, or 10C, and consistently below, a koi or goldfish can no longer properly digest food. Aquaculture extension guidance and koi-vet advice line up on the same warning: feed a fish in water that cold and the food doesn't digest, it sits and rots in the gut, and that can kill the fish outright.

So the rule is to watch the water temperature, not the calendar, and stop feeding once it holds consistently below about 50F. Don't resume in a warm snap and then stop again; once you're into the cold season the fish are winding down for good and don't need it. They live off stored reserves through the winter at the bottom of the pond, and a fish that goes into winter unfed is far safer than one carrying food it can't process.

Pull the pump and keep the deep water still

Here's where the deep water earns its keep. Water is densest at about 39F, so in a pond deep enough the coldest water doesn't sink; instead a warm, still layer settles at the bottom and that's where the fish spend the winter. Your job is to leave that layer alone. If you keep the main pump running through the freeze, you circulate the whole pond and drag that warm bottom water up to the frigid surface, chilling the exact place the fish are resting.

So pull the main pump for the winter, or if you leave it in, raise its intake well up off the bottom so it isn't pulling from the deep layer. Keep the deep water still. Owners who overwinter fish successfully describe deep ends holding in the high 30s all winter once they stop circulating, and the seasonal move most of them make is to shut the main pump down and switch to a small aerator instead. Depth is the safeguard here: this whole approach assumes four to five feet of water for the fish to drop into, and a shallow pond in a cold climate needs more help, not less.

Keep a gas-exchange hole open all winter

This is the step the whole sequence is built around, and it's pure life support. A pond sealed edge to edge under ice traps the carbon dioxide and ammonia the fish exhale and cuts off the oxygen they breathe, and that, not the cold, is what kills fish over a hard winter. Keeping even one modest hole open in the ice keeps the gases moving out and oxygen moving in, which is what carries the fish through. The extension and aquatic-vet guidance is consistent on this, and it's the reason a de-icer exists at all.

And don't try to solve winter by heating the pond. A de-icer isn't a water heater, and the goal is never to warm the water; fish overwinter fine near freezing at depth, and trying to hold a whole pond warm is both futile and unnecessary. The last rule is electrical and it isn't optional: every outdoor device, the de-icer, the aerator, the pump, belongs on a GFCI-protected circuit, because these are mains appliances running in and beside water all winter. Firstly, you must put a hole in the ice only using hot water . ...Then use an aquarium pump and stone to keep the hole open. You can pick them up in wallmart or a pet store for a few bucks. If you smash a hole in the ice, you'll probably kill your fish, as they are very sensitive to the vibrations that will result from pounding on the ice.

no doubt !....absolutely NO smashing a hole..the shockwaves from that will extremely stress the fish . put a pot of hot water on top of the ice and watch it till it melts thru. ideally you dont even want to pour it.

I don't use any type of heating element just either an air stone or waterfall to keep a hole, but my ponds have always been at least 4 ft deep here in the Chicago area. There is a layer of water at the bottom of the pond that is 38 degrees that is more dense than other temperatures and the fish will go to that and be fine if your pond is at least 4-5 ft deep.

I pull my external pump, stuff a bunch of bubble wrap in the skimmer to displace the water. Set up the aerator with a line in each pond that has significant fish load... In the big pond the aerator is around 20 feet from the deep end, the water in the deep end stayed around 37 all winter, the pond did not freeze over. The fishless ponds froze down around 7 inches. No fish loss yet over winter.

Your fairly close to me, I do shut my pumps down and just run the air pump for the winter. I do let mine run as long as I can. I usually go into late December... I do move my air pump closer to the surface.

Carp in general are quite hardy, and can tolerate some extreme weather changes. It's quick changes in temps that will stress the fish.
