Fish stocking calculator
Enter your pond volume and pick a fish. We'll give a conservative adult stocking limit, because the fastest way to crash a pond is one fish too many.
Your pond
Not sure of your volume? Use the pond volume calculator first, then bring the gallons here.
Conservative limits from Penn State & Michigan State Extension and koi-club guidance, sized for adult fish. Oxygen, filtration, and surface area are the real ceiling, so understock and let the pond mature. Estimates only.
Why the number is smaller than you think
Stocking is not limited by how many fish fit, it is limited by how much waste the water and filter can process, and by how much oxygen the surface can dissolve. Those ceilings are reached long before the pond looks crowded. We also size for the adult fish, not the fingerling you buy: a 3-inch koi at the store is a two-foot, heavy-waste animal in three years. Plan for what it becomes, not what fits in the bag.
Gallons per adult fish
Our limits sit at the cautious end of the extension-service and koi-club ranges, figured per adult:
- Koi — about 250 gallons each; they reach ~24 inches and produce heavy waste.
- Fancy goldfish — about 20 gallons each; smaller and slower than comets.
- Comet / common goldfish — about 15 gallons each; small but active, hitting 10–12 inches.
Stock light and grow into it
A young pond has an immature biofilter, so the safest path is to stock to a fraction of the ceiling and add fish over months as the bacteria colony catches up, which is why the results show a lower "better to start with" number. Understocking costs you nothing and buys margin for a hot spell or a filter that needs cleaning; overstocking shows up as green water, gasping fish at the surface, and, in the worst case, an overnight oxygen crash.
What keeps a stocked pond healthy
The fish count is only safe if the support system holds. These are the four things that keep water quality ahead of the waste load.

OASE
OASE BioSmart 5000 Pond Filter
Filtration, not fish length, is the real ceiling this calculator respects. A biofilter rated to your load processes the ammonia those fish produce; undersize it and the stocking number stops mattering.

HIBLOW
HIBLOW HP-40 Pond Air Pump
Oxygen is what caps a stocked pond, especially on warm nights. A dedicated air pump on a diffuser keeps dissolved oxygen up so the fish you did stock stay healthy through a heat wave.

API
API Pond Master Liquid Test Kit
The way you learn you have overstocked is a rising ammonia or nitrite reading, weeks before fish look sick. A liquid test kit is the cheapest insurance for a new or freshly stocked pond.

Hikari
Hikari Saki-Hikari Koi Food
Overfeeding acts like overstocking, it dumps waste the filter has to chase. A quality pellet you feed sparingly keeps the water load in line with the conservative fish count above.
