How Deep Should a Koi Pond Be?

A four-foot pond frozen solid across the top is more dangerous than a three-foot pond with an open hole in the ice. Get a workable depth, then spend your attention on keeping that hole open.

Every pond-building guide gives you the same answer to this question, usually "three to four feet," and then moves on. That number is not wrong, but on its own it is close to useless, because it implies that depth is the variable that decides whether your koi survive the winter. It is not. Depth buys you a pocket of stable, slightly warmer water at the bottom, which matters, and it buys some protection from herons, which also matters. What it does not buy you is oxygen, and oxygen is what fish run out of when a pond seals over with ice.
So this guide answers the depth question properly, with the number for your climate, and then covers the three other variables that matter at least as much, the point at which digging deeper starts costing you more than it returns, and the part where your depth decision quietly determines how much liner you need to buy. The short answer, by climate
Depth requirements scale with how hard your winter freezes, and the honest ranges look like this:
- Cold climates (roughly zone 5 and colder): three feet is the working minimum, four feet is the comfortable target. Deeper than four buys little except excavation cost.
- Moderate climates (zones 6 to 7): three feet is comfortable and widely proven. Keepers report large, healthy koi wintering in exactly this.
- Mild climates (zone 8 and warmer): three feet is still the floor for koi. Winter is not the constraint here, but shallow water heats fast and swings hard in summer, and a heron can reach fish anywhere in a pond under about three feet. Two feet is goldfish and water-garden territory.
- Any climate, for koi specifically: give them room to turn and swim, not just depth. A deep, cramped box is worse than a moderately deep pond with space.
Real keepers land in the same place. One with a cold-weather pond puts the floor at "3 foot is what i feel is minimum in cold weather areas but we have seen some that are only 2 feet deep," and adds a detail worth remembering if you are building partly above ground: "if a foot is above grade it will chill the water far more than is below grade." Surrounding earth insulates; a raised wall does the opposite. Another keeper in northeastern Pennsylvania reports: "I'm in northeastern PA, zone 6a. The deepest part of my pond is 3 feet. I have some tremendous koi, so don't worry about 4 feet preventing your koi from getting large." Depth does not cap koi growth; feeding and water quality do.
What depth buys you
Depth earns its place for three reasons, and it is worth being precise about them. The first is a thermal refuge. Water is densest at about 39 degrees Fahrenheit, so as a pond cools, that densest water sinks and sits on the bottom while colder water and ice stay above it. In a pond deep enough to stratify, the fish get a bottom layer that holds near 39 degrees no matter how cold the air gets, and they settle into it and wait out the winter. A shallow pond cannot hold that layer and swings with the weather instead.
The second is summer, which people forget when they ask this question in October. A deeper pond has more thermal mass and heats more slowly, so it holds dissolved oxygen better through a heat wave, and in hot climates that is a bigger survival factor than winter cold. The third is predators. A heron hunts by wading, so it works the shallows and the shelves; deep water gives fish somewhere a wading bird cannot follow. None of those three benefits requires five feet. All of them are largely satisfied at three to four.
Why depth alone will not save your fish in winter
Here is the part the standard advice skips. Koi in a properly deep pond still die over winter, and when they do, the cause is almost never that the water got too cold. It is that the surface sealed. Ice, especially ice covered in snow, stops gas exchange: oxygen cannot dissolve in, and the gases produced by decomposition on the pond floor cannot get out. The fish suffocate under a lid, in water that was never dangerously cold. A keeper reviewing exactly this loss put it as: "Most likely it was because of lack of oxygen. Floating heaters are borderline effective, and if they were ever covered by snow and ice, even temporarily, the fish could have run out of oxygen."
The fix is not more depth, it is an open hole. A de-icer floats on the surface and keeps one small area from freezing so gases can exchange, and this is the point that gets mangled constantly: a de-icer does not warm your pond, and it is not supposed to. It keeps a breathing hole open, nothing more. Some are even sold under the word "heater" on the box, which does not change what they do. Pair one with gentle aeration and you have covered the actual risk. One important detail: keep the air stone high, roughly a foot below the surface, rather than on the bottom, so you are not dragging that warm 39-degree layer up and mixing it away. You want the surface open and the bottom left alone. And because it is powered gear beside water, put the de-icer on a GFCI-protected outdoor circuit, which the National Electrical Code requires anyway.
The three other numbers that matter as much
Depth is one variable in a set of four, and a pond that is deep but small can be worse than one that is shallower and larger. The others:
- Total volume. More water is more buffer against every swing, in temperature, oxygen, and water chemistry. A 3,000-gallon pond at three feet is a safer winter home than a 600-gallon pond at four.
- Surface area. Gas exchange happens at the surface, so a wide pond breathes better than a narrow deep one. As one keeper advises a builder debating five feet: "Even 3 feet would have been fine. Better to have more surface area (for aeration purposes) than super depth."
- Fish load. The same pond is fine with four koi and marginal with fifteen. Under ice, biomass is what draws the oxygen down. Stock light and winter gets much easier.
Note also that the volume you think you have is usually optimistic. Sloping sides, planting shelves, and rock all reduce actual water volume below the length-times-width-times-depth figure, sometimes by a quarter or more. Calculate honestly, because your stocking and your equipment sizing both depend on it.
Where digging deeper stops paying off
Past about four feet the returns fall off fast and the costs do not. Excavation gets disproportionately expensive and you may hit a water table, which can float a liner or a concrete shell. Maintenance gets harder: you cannot reach the bottom to net or vacuum debris, and at some point you cannot stand in it at all. One keeper describes the practical ceiling well: "Even at just over three feet deep, it can be a challenge to get in a pond if you need to. I can stand up and just barely reach the bottom of mine with my head still above water. Any deeper and I'd need a snorkel."
Deep ponds also fight you on planting, since marginal and water-lily plants need shelves at specific depths, and a steep-sided deep pond has nowhere to put them. Another keeper who built deep reports it plainly: "Had a 5' deep raised koi pond. Growing any plants isn't possible. Cleaning was also a challenge." Add the safety consideration if children are around, and the sensible shape for most backyard koi ponds emerges: three to four feet in the deepest section, with shelves around the margins for plants, rather than a uniform five-foot pit.
What your depth decision does to your liner
Depth is not just a hole; it is a line item. Liner size is driven by depth twice over, because the sheet has to run down one wall, across the bottom, and up the other side. The standard formula is: liner length equals pond length plus twice the maximum depth plus about two feet of overlap, and liner width equals pond width plus twice the depth plus the same overlap. So going from three feet deep to five adds four feet to both dimensions of the sheet you have to buy, which on a mid-size pond is a substantial jump in cost, before you have moved any extra soil.
For the liner itself, 45-mil pond-grade EPDM is the standard and what we would use at any depth. Be careful with that phrase, because thickness is not what makes a liner fish-safe: roofing-grade EPDM comes in the same 45 mil but is manufactured with algaecides and fire retardants that will poison fish. Buy a liner sold and labelled for ponds, such as Firestone PondGard, and never substitute roofing membrane because the price per square foot looks better. It is flexible enough to conform to shelves and corners without excessive folding, and it is forgiving to install. Whatever depth you settle on, put a proper underlayment beneath it, since a deeper pond means more water pressure pressing the liner onto whatever sharp stone or root is underneath. Measure, add the depth twice, add the overlap, and buy once.

Does pond depth affect how big koi grow?
Not directly, and this is a common misconception. Koi growth is driven by genetics, feeding, water quality, and space to swim, not by whether the pond is three feet or five feet deep.
