Our take: string algae is a different enemy than green water

The first thing to get straight is what you're fighting, because the two common pond-algae problems aren't the same and don't respond to the same product. Why nothing kills string algae for good

Here's the part the bottles won't tell you: no product on this page, or any other, kills string algae permanently. It can't, because algae isn't the disease, it's the symptom. Algae grows wherever there's light and dissolved nutrient, and a stocked pond is a steady nutrient factory: fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying leaves all feed nitrate and phosphate into the water, and sunlight does the rest. Knock the algae down with any treatment and, if the nutrients and light are unchanged, it grows back. You have reset the clock, not stopped it.

The safety problem that can kill your fish

Hydrogen peroxide poured directly on the string algae will kill it within minutes. But that method is less effective if the string algae is under water. And also remember that any algae that dies in your pond will add to the nutrient load that is already out of balance. Hence my recommendation to remove as much as possible by hand.

I used it in my AZ pond, the string algae grew like a weed. I would dump in 14 liters, one liter per 1000 gallons. Wiped it right out did not bother the fish at all. I would then pull out the dead gray stuff.

here's another case of fish loss and blaming a product that has successfully worked for MANY over many years with no problem. It usually stems from the user not knowing their true amount of water volume and the lack of dissolved oxygen in the system. I've used the product personally and professionally for nearly 10 years without a single fish loss! But I know how much water I have and I keep a high level of DO in the pond at all times.

I don't think AlgaeFix would knock your bio, since you state you are very well aerated but on ponds that are challenged in oxygen, I suspect it would. Biological bacteria need oxygen too and for someone in a very warm, under aerated pond, it could be an issue both for the fish and the bio bacteria.

Algaefix definitely work, and it works quickly (if you consider 3 day quick enough). But i would definitely remove as much as possible manually as well. I also use barley bale. It's natural and lasts a very long time. But it does take a lot longer for you to see the effects. Sunlight is probably your greatest enemy at the moment though.
