Preformed, prefab, molded: the same pond under different names
The words on the racks all point at one thing. A preformed pond, a prefab pond, and a molded pond are the same product: a rigid, pre-shaped shell you drop into a hole and fill. Most are molded from thick polyethylene plastic, the black or charcoal shells you see at the big-box store; a smaller number are fiberglass, which is stiffer, longer-lived, and much pricier, aimed at formal above-ground installs rather than a buried garden pond. The gallon number on the box is not the water you get

You leave freeboard at the top so the water does not slop over, so plan on keeping meaningfully less than the badge, often closer to two-thirds to three-quarters of it once the level sits where it should.
That gap is not a rounding quibble, it decides what the pond can do. Water volume is the buffer that keeps temperature and water chemistry stable, and a small pond swings faster than a big one on both. A shell that reads like it holds enough for a couple of small fish may, at a real fill line, hold barely enough to keep the water from cooking in July or chilling hard overnight. Do the discount in your head at the store: read the rated gallons, take off a quarter or so for freeboard, and judge the pond by that smaller number.
The same arithmetic sets your stocking headroom. The common rule of an inch of fish per ten gallons is already generous for a small unfiltered pond, and it runs on real water, not the badge. Take a thirty-three gallon shell, knock off a quarter for freeboard, and you are near twenty-five usable gallons, which is two or three small goldfish before you are crowding them, not the school the footprint suggests. Push past that and the water fouls between changes, algae takes over, and the pond that was supposed to be low-effort becomes a weekly chore. Size the fish to the water you keep once freeboard is subtracted, and a small shell stays easy to run.
Shelf depth is the ceiling on plants and fish
The molded shelves are the other spec the photos flatter. Preformed shells are shallow by nature, and the planting shelves are shallower still. That shelf depth is a hard ceiling. It sets how deep a marginal plant can sit, and it sets whether the pond has any zone deep enough for fish to hold in through a cold snap or a heat wave.
This is where koi ambitions and preformed ponds part ways. Koi need real depth and real water volume, and no small shell gives them either, so a preformed pond is a plant-and-goldfish proposition at most, not a koi pond. Read the depth, not just the footprint, and be honest about the livestock it can carry. A shell that looks generous across the top can still be too shallow to overwinter a single fish, and the shelf that looks perfect for marginals may sit too high to keep a plant's crown where it wants to be.
Install is where preformed ponds live or die
Nothing about a shell matters if the install is wrong, because a preformed pond is only as strong as the ground packed against it. The wall is thin plastic. It holds its shape because the earth around it holds it, not because the plastic is stiff on its own. Get the hole level and backfill firmly against every side and shelf, and the shell is solid for years. Leave a wall unsupported and the water inside will push it out until it bows, rolls at the rim, or cracks at a corner.
Two failure modes show up again and again, and both trace to support. Set the shell out of level and the water sits crooked in it, which looks wrong and loads one side harder than the rest. Try to raise a shell above grade without bracing the walls, and propping the shelves alone will not save it, because the sides are what give way. If you build above ground, you frame and brace the whole perimeter, not just the shelves. In the ground, the rule is plainer: a level hole, sand or sifted soil under the base, and backfill tamped in against the walls as you fill, so the earth and the water rise together and the plastic is never asked to hold a load by itself.
When a flexible liner beats a shell
There is a size where preformed stops making sense, and it arrives sooner than the racks of big shells suggest. Somewhere around a hundred gallons, and firmly by a few hundred, a flexible EPDM liner wins on the two axes that matter. On cost, a sheet of rubber covers far more gallons per dollar than a molded shell of the same capacity. On shape, a liner takes any outline and any depth you are willing to dig, instead of the one the mold gave you.
The cost math is worth doing out loud, because it is the part the shell racks hope you skip. A shell in the thirty-gallon class runs north of a hundred dollars, so you are paying something like three to four dollars a gallon for molded plastic. A 5x10 sheet of EPDM covers a hole several times that volume for a similar price, which drops the cost per gallon by an order of magnitude the moment the pond gets real. Sizing a liner is its own bit of arithmetic the listing will not do for you: take the pond length plus twice the depth, the width plus twice the depth, and add a foot of overlap on every side. Do that once and you will see why the shell only wins while the pond stays tiny.
The freedom is the part owners notice most once they have built both. A liner lets you cut a deeper zone for fish, a broad shelf for plants, and a natural edge that hides itself, none of which a shell offers. The tradeoff is honest work: you dig the shape, lay underlayment, set the liner, and hide the edges, where a shell is mostly drop-and-fill. So the split is clean. Matching the shell to the pond you have in mind
