PVC is the cheapest and lightest of all, but it stiffens and turns UV-brittle over the years and can crack at the folds, so we'd only trust it on a small or short-term pond. Pick the wrong pond liner and the pond makes you pay a season later: a seam that stiffens and splits, a fold that cracks in a hard freeze, a slow leak you chase for weeks before you give up and drain the pond to reline it. For a pond that holds fish and is meant to last, the liner isn't the place to save the last hundred dollars. The material you choose decides how long the pond lives.

Three materials cover almost every backyard build: EPDM rubber, RPE (reinforced polyethylene), and PVC. They aren't interchangeable, and the cheapest sheet that fits your hole is rarely the right one. Our approach is to match the material to the dig. A complex pond you want forever wants rubber. A big pond with a simple shape can take the stronger, cheaper plastic. A small or temporary pond can get away with the budget one. Below is how we rank them, and why.

Match the material to the dig, not the price tag

The mistake we watch people make is to shop liners by price per square foot and buy the cheapest sheet that covers the hole. That gets the decision backwards. The liner has to survive the shape you dug and the sun it'll sit under for the next twenty years, and those demands, not the sticker, are what should pick the material. Match the material to the dig and the rest of the pond is built on something that lasts; misjudge it and no amount of good filtration or stocking saves you from a reline.

So we rank the three by a single question: what does your dig ask of the liner? A pond with planting shelves, undercut edges, and tight curves needs a material that drapes into every contour without tenting or bridging, and that's rubber. A big pond with a plain, simple outline doesn't need that flexibility and can trade it for raw strength and a lower price, which is the reinforced plastic. A small or temporary pond doesn't need to last decades, so the budget sheet is defensible there and nowhere else. EPDM rubber: the flexible default that outlasts the pond

EPDM is a synthetic rubber, and flexibility is its whole advantage. A 45-mil rubber sheet drapes into shelves, wraps undercut edges, and settles into tight curves without fighting you, so it fits a complex, natural-looking pond the way a stiff plastic never will. It stays pliable in the cold instead of going hard and brittle, and a good fish-safe rubber liner is rated for roughly twenty years in the sun. That combination, conforms to anything and lasts two decades, is why it's the default for a fish pond you care about.

The price you pay is literal and physical. EPDM is the heaviest of the three by a wide margin, so a big sheet is a two-person job to move and position, and it costs more per square foot than either plastic. For a complex or forever pond that cost is the right one to pay, because the liner is the one component you can't easily swap later without emptying the pond. Where EPDM stops making sense is a large, plain rectangle, where you're paying for flexibility and weight you'll never use, and that's exactly where the reinforced plastic comes in.

RPE: the strongest per mil, if your shape is simple

RPE, reinforced polyethylene, is the modern value answer. It's the strongest of the three per mil of thickness, so a thin RPE sheet takes more puncture and tear abuse than a thicker rubber one, and it holds up well against UV. It's also markedly lighter and cheaper than EPDM, which matters most on a big pond where the rubber option turns into a heavy, expensive sheet you can barely drag across the yard. On strength and price per square foot, RPE wins outright.

The tradeoff is stiffness. RPE doesn't drape the way rubber does, so it fights tight curves, planting shelves, and undercut edges, tenting and bridging across contours instead of settling into them. On a simple outline, a rectangle, an oval, a gently curved kidney, that stiffness is a non-issue and you keep all the strength and savings. On a fussy, shelved, naturalistic dig it becomes a real fight, and the rubber is worth its premium. So we reach for RPE on the big, simple ponds and only there.

PVC: cheap and light, but it doesn't age well

PVC is the cheapest and lightest sheet on the shelf, and for a small or temporary pond that's a fair reason to buy it. A reinforced-mesh PVC liner installs easily, costs little, and holds water fine on day one. If you're lining a preformed shelf, a short-lived feature, or a small ornamental pool you may redo in a few years, the budget material does the job and there's no shame in it.

What PVC doesn't do is age gracefully in the sun. It stiffens over the years and turns UV-brittle, and once it's brittle the folds are where it fails, cracking at the very creases a pond liner has to hold. Shade and full coverage buy it more life, direct sun takes it away fast, so its working lifespan swings widely with how it's installed and where it sits. For a pond you want to keep for decades, that variability is disqualifying. We treat PVC as a small-pond and short-term material, not a candidate for a fish pond built to last.

Fish-safe grade isn't optional, and roofing sheet isn't the same

One rule sits above the material choice and applies to all three: use a liner sold as pond-grade and fish-safe. The tempting money-saver, and it comes up constantly, is to buy EPDM from a roofing supplier because the roll is cheaper. Don't. Roofing and construction membranes are often treated with algaecides, mildewcides, and other additives that keep a roof clean and will poison a pond. The same is true of generic plastic sheet not sold for ponds. Pond-grade fish-safe liner is formulated without those additives, and that's what your fish are living against every hour of every day.

This is the one place we won't defer to the crowd or to a good price. A forum thread bragging about a cheap roofing-store find isn't a source we'd follow with fish in the water, because the failure mode isn't a leak you can patch, it's a slow poisoning you may not diagnose until the fish are gone. Buy the liner labeled for ponds and fish, in whichever of the three materials your dig calls for, and pay the small premium over the construction-grade sheet. It's the cheapest insurance in the whole build.

If it were our pond, the decision would come down to three questions in order. Is the shape complex and do you want the pond for decades? Buy EPDM rubber and stop reading. Is the pond big but simple in outline, and are you weighing cost and weight? Buy RPE and enjoy the strength and the savings. Is it small, ornamental, or temporary, and are you fine relining in a few years? PVC is defensible there and only there.

Across all three, size the sheet the same way, length plus twice the depth plus a generous overlap on every side, and never try to save by cutting the margin close. And whichever material wins your dig, buy the pond-grade fish-safe version of it. The buyers who match material to shape and pay the small fish-safe premium install a liner once. The ones who chase the cheapest square foot are the ones draining the pond two summers later to do it again.

i have a freind who had a PVC liner better than 10 years when they sold the house. and their outdoor pond was still fine. i've got 5 years on my basement pond with a pvc liner. but for outside i would still opt for EPDM. much stronger and better U.V resistanmce.

My pond just hit 1 year old. I didnt do my homework when I started, so I have pvc liner. Its 22 mil, which I think is very thick. I did seam two of them together, and so far no issues.
