Every winter the same worry shows up on the pond forums: the surface is freezing over, the fish are down at the bottom, and the owner isn't sure what a de-icer is for. The answer surprises people. A de-icer isn't a pond heater, and buying one thinking it'll warm your fish is the first mistake to avoid.

Fish survive a hard winter at the bottom of the pond, in water that stays a few degrees above freezing no matter how cold the air gets. What they can't survive is a pond sealed shut by ice. So a de-icer has one job, holding a hole open for gas exchange, and once you understand that the buying decision gets simple: match the wattage to how cold your winters get, and add an aerator if you want to run it for less.

Our take: a de-icer opens a hole, it doesn't heat the pond

Start here, because it changes everything about how you shop. A pond de-icer doesn't warm the water, and no de-icer on the market can. A 100 to 1,500 watt element can't meaningfully raise the temperature of a few thousand gallons sitting in freezing air. All it does is keep the water right next to it from freezing, which leaves a small opening in the ice. That opening is the entire value of the device.

This isn't our opinion, it's the physics, and extension and koi-vet sources say it flatly: fish overwinter at the bottom of the pond in water that holds a few degrees above freezing, and trying to heat the pond is neither possible nor helpful. A frozen-over pond is dangerous for a different reason. When ice seals the surface, carbon dioxide and ammonia from the fish and from decaying leaves have nowhere to go, and oxygen can't get in. The fish aren't cold, they're suffocating under a lid. The hole a de-icer holds open is what lets those gases out and oxygen back in.

What the open hole is for

Once you see the job as gas exchange rather than warmth, the winter setup makes sense. Through the cold months you stop feeding the fish, they slow down at the bottom, and their metabolism drops to almost nothing. They need very little oxygen and produce very little waste, but they still need some exchange with the air, and a sealed pond cuts that off. A single open hole is enough to keep the water livable underneath.

That's why a small de-icer does the job in most climates. You aren't fighting the cold, you're just refusing to let the ice close completely. The unit runs, a patch of water stays liquid, and the gases move through it. Everything else you might read about warming the water or protecting the fish from cold is beside the point, and often leads people to buy far more wattage than they need.

Size by wattage, not by pond gallons

The number that matters is watts against your climate, not gallons against a rated capacity. A de-icer is rated by how much heat it can put into the water near it, and how much you need depends entirely on how cold and how windy your winters run. This is the opposite of sizing a filter, where gallons and fish load drive the choice. For a de-icer, ask how hard your pond freezes.

In a mild winter, a low-watt thermostatic unit around 100 to 300 watts holds a hole open and costs little to run, because it only switches on near freezing and shuts off the rest of the time. In a cold climate, where the air sits at zero or below for stretches, a 100 watt unit can freeze over completely and a 1,000 to 1,250 watt floater is what keeps the opening from icing shut. Buying the big unit for a mild winter wastes money on power all season; buying the small one for a hard freeze leaves you with a frozen pond on the coldest night. The smartest setup is a de-icer plus an aerator

If you want the opening held open for the least power, don't lean on the de-icer alone. Pair a modest de-icer with an aerator, and let the two share the work. An aerator pushes air through a stone in the pond, and the rising bubbles keep a patch of surface moving so it resists freezing, while also adding oxygen directly to the water. In many winters the aerator alone keeps a hole open, and the de-icer only has to step in on the coldest nights.

Two details make the pairing work. Keep the airstone high, about a foot below the surface rather than down at the bottom, so it doesn't stir the warmer deep water up into the cold air and chill the whole pond. And treat the de-icer as backup for the aerator, not the other way around. Run this way and a small thermostatic de-icer plus an air pump covers all but the deepest freeze for a fraction of what a big de-icer left on all season would cost.

Safety comes first, and it isn't optional

Everything about a de-icer is a powered device sitting in water outdoors, so a few safety rules are non-optional, and these come from electrical code and from the people who keep fish alive through winters, not from the forums. Plug every outdoor powered device into a GFCI outlet. A ground-fault interrupter cuts the power the instant current leaks, which is what protects you and your fish, and a de-icer, pump, or aerator run without one is a real hazard. If a de-icer keeps tripping the GFCI, suspect the outlet or moisture in it before you blame the unit.

Two more rules matter just as much. Never smash the ice to make a hole. The shock wave from a hammer or an axe travels through the water and can kill the fish outright. If the pond has already frozen over, melt an opening instead, either with the de-icer or by setting a pot of hot water on the ice until it melts through. And don't try to warm the pond to help the fish. They're safe in the cold water at depth, and heating the water only stresses them and runs your bill up for nothing. The de-icer keeps a hole open, and that's all the fish need from it.

Thermostatic versus always-on

De-icers split into two kinds, and the difference is mostly running cost. A thermostatic unit has a built-in sensor that switches the element on only when the water nears freezing and shuts it off otherwise. Over a winter that adds up to real savings, because the unit is idle most of the time instead of drawing its full wattage around the clock. An always-on de-icer runs at full draw whenever it's plugged in, which is simpler and cheaper to buy but more expensive to run. Your "de-icer" merely keeps the water directly adjacent to its placement warm enough to prevent freezing. Your de-icer will do absolutely nothing in keeping your pond water "heated". It merely consumes many times more electricity to do the same job as an aerator or a breather. The water surface does not need to be ice-free, there needs merely to be a small hole in the ice to allow for gas exchange.

250 watts might not be enough. I have 100 watt heaters that handle most of our winters in southern Maryland but with super cold weather, the water freezes solid around them. Thats when I plug in the 1500 watt heaters.

With this kind of cold, you might need a more powerful de-icer, as suggested. The one I use is 1000 watts and it's the only thing that works when we hit 0 degrees or lower.

I don't know how cold your winters get, but I leave my aerator pump outside, on the bench, under a flower pot. The air stone is placed about 12" below the surface. There are a couple of weeks in January/February where the aerator doesn't keep a hole open, and that is when the pond breather helps.

Have any of you used low wattage (100-250 W) deicers? I'm not crazy about the idea of running a 1000+ watt heater 24 hours a day during the winter. I've found a few on Amazon that are low wattage and are just meant to keep a tiny hole open for gas exchange.

I wonder if the GFCI is the problem? They do go bad. The wind could be blowing moisture into the GFCI and it could be tripping due to moisture. As far as a heater goes, back when I needed one, I used one of these for 10 years and it performed beautifully.
